As I am now into my second year of reselling full time, I want to talk about niche selling and variety selling. I view myself as a variety seller. I list mostly small items across multiple categories, this is working for me at this time.
Many resellers sell across different categories and other sell just in a limited number of categories. There is nothing wrong with picking a niche to sell or having a wide range of categories. I will be focusing on picking a niche for reselling. When I say a "niche" I mean picking an item or category to solely buy and sell in.
Selling a variety of items across a variety of categories gives a reseller more opportunities to make more sales. By selling a variety of items you will have a broader customer base. You will also be able to adjust to the resale market trends.
When selling a variety of items you need room to store and organize the items. When selling a variety of items there can be more competition and the possibility for a lower profit margin. Lastly, you may need to allow more time for sourcing, listing, shipping, and handling customer inquiries.
Reselling in a niche category give you the opportunities to make higher sales. When selling in a niche category you may have less competition, giving you the chance to stand out in the market. Chose a niche you have knowledge or experience with, this will help you establish trust with customers, giving you creditability in the market and repeat customers. When reselling in a niche it makes it easier for you to market your items, especially on social media. When reselling in a niche you will not need as much room for storage, depending on what niche you chose. The time to source will vary on the niche as well.
I encourage you to research in depth which one is best for you, your time, and your space. Experiment with both and see, some resellers begin selling a variety of items and slowly move into niche selling.
